CQC registration of GP practices put back a year

The department of health has announced that CQC registration of GP practices will now happen by April 2013 – a delay of one year. This seems to be a recognition that 2012 was unrealistic given the other changes currently underway. In addition, the registration criteria are to be reviewed which will probably lead to a relaxation. This is good news (for now at least) for the many GP practices concerned that CQC registration would be particularly difficult in older surgery buildings. Practices should note however, that if they provide out of hours care the deadline for registration is still April 2012. In addition, practices wishing to tender for new services may find that CQC registration is a condition of the tender.
